The co-mayors of Sirnak’s Uludere district from the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Zeynep Uren and Yunus Urek, have been detained.
As the co-mayors were taken to the police headquarters in Uludere, a large number of police officers had surrounded the council building.
A Turkish crackdown against DBP councils and politicians in recent months has seen many co-mayors arrested or discharged from office while many councils are now being run by trustees appointed by the government. Turkey says the DBP councils have been supporting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The crackdown has been criticised by domestic opposition parties and the European Union as a worrying development for Turkish democracy.
