Turkey’s prime minister Binali Yildirim has today warned the international powers invested in Syria that a preference has to be made between his country and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.
“Certain forces are trying to gain ground in Syria through groups like the YPG and PYD [Democratic Union Party]. Our friends should know that whatever disguise these groups take on, we know them very well. Before our friends and allies do something, they should think not once, but ten times over. They have to decide on who they will move forward with; it’s either Turkey or the terrorist organisations,” Yildirim berated.
Turkey has recently stepped up efforts to convince the US, among others, to ditch the Kurds for the operation against the Islamic State stronghold, saying its army and the rebel groups it is supporting should participate in the operation instead.
