Council of Europe warns Turkey on respecting rule of law, judicial independence

Secretary General of the European Council Thorbjorn Jagland.

Council of Europe General Secretary Thorbjorn Jagland has commented on Turkey’s unofficial referendum result and warned the government on respecting human rights.

“In the light of these neck-a-neck results the Turkish leadership needs to think carefully about its future steps. It is of utmost importance that the rule of law protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and judicial independence is guaranteed.”

Jagland also said that the Council of Europe, of which Turkey is a member, was ready to support the country during this period.
