German Left Party leader Sahra Wagenknecht has accused Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of inciting terrorism and being the “godfather of terror,” Spiegel Online has reported.

Speaking at an event at the German Parliament on Monday, Wagenknecht, referring to a recent speech made by Erdogan in which he said, “If Europe continues this way, no European in any part of the world can walk safely in the streets,” commented, “This is a call to terrorism, this is how a terrorist speaks. Nothing else.”

The opposition leader also likened Turkish foreign policy to that of the Nazi Party saying, “it clearly points to the foreign policy of the Third Reich, by creating minorities in other countries, it’s trying to establish its own violent policies, its own geopolitics and its own blackmail policy in other countries.”

Wagenknecht also criticised Chancellor Angela Merkel for not opposing Erdogan strongly and accused of “being complicit” in bolstering his power with her visits to Turkey.

Parliament Chair Norbert Lammert also had critical words for Ankara and charged Erdogan with staging a coup against democracy.

He alleged that Erdogan and the Justice and Development (AKP) Party government were planning the “transformation of a doubtless fragile but democratic order into an authoritarian system.”

Relations between Turkey and several European countries have been at an all-time low since several government ministers were prevented from holding rallies in European cities, leading to accusations of “Nazi practices” by Erdogan and other officials.
