Well-known Turkish journalist Can Dundar, former editor-in-chief of centre-left newspaper Cumhuriyet, has launched a new web site in German and Turkish.
Özgürüz (We are free), as the site has been named, will provide news in “one of the darkest periods in Turkey’s history”. The site opened on 24 January, on the same day as investigative journalist Ugur Mumcu, also from Cumhuriyet, was assasinated in 1993.
Can Dundar, now exiled in Germany, was arrested in November 2015 together with his colleague Erdem Gul, accused of spying and “divulging state secrets”, after his newspaper published footage of Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT sending weapons to jihadist groups in Syria.
