Greek authorities “pushed back” forty refugees to the Turkey border after they tried to cross into Greece illegally.
According to Turkish state-run news agency AA, the refugees crossed the Maritza River at the Turkey-Greece border when they were detained by Greek security forces. After being taken into custody for a day, the refugees, including women and children from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, were deported to Turkey.
“Push back” or “deportation” of this sort is illegal according to international rights agreements.
Hundreds of people have drowned in previous years in the Maritza River while trying to cross from Turkey into Greece.
