Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Mehmet Ali Aslan has been released after his detention by police in southeastern Midyat province in Mardin, Turkey late on Saturday.

Aslan’s car was stopped by police while he was driving to Mardin and he was taken to the prosecutor’s office after he was stopped on a street for several hours.

Turkey’s pro-minority rights Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has had at least 9,000 of its members detained and 2,500 arrested and imprisoned since a return to clashes 18 months ago, according to a party lawmaker.

12 HDP lawmakers as well as dozens of co-mayors have been imprisoned pending trial since July’s failed coup attempt according to human rights associations.
