Identity of IS militant who burned alive two Turkish soldiers exposed

Two Turkish soldiers burned to death by Islamic State, East Aleppo

The Islamic State (IS) released a video showing two captured Turkish soldiers being burned alive last month. Allegedly, one of the IS militants in the 19-minute video, showing two uniformed men being hauled from a cage before being bound and torched, is a Turkish citizen called Hasan Aydın.

Speaking in Turkish, the killer of the two men criticises Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and calls for “destruction to be sowed” in Turkey. Hasan Aydın was detained with military materials and a drone close to the Syrian border in 2015 and but later released. Four months later, he left Turkey with his family and joined the Islamic State.

Another IS militant, Abdurrahman Alagoz, who conducted the suicide attack in Suruc resulting in the deaths of 34 people was also detained by Turkish authorities and subsequently released before he carried out the attack.

The opposition in Turkey has criticised the government and the security forces for their perceived shortcomings in dealing with the threat of IS inside Turkey’s borders.
