Kurdish politician Ahmet Turk has been taken to hospital in the southeastern city Elazig following a request from the Justice Ministry and Health Ministry.
The 74 year-old was dismissed from his position as Mardin Municipality co-chair and imprisoned on 24 November on terror charges, pending trial.
142 public figures, including Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk, made a statement on Friday calling for Turk’s release on the grounds of health deterioration. The former MP has a pacemaker and suffers from high blood pressure according to reports.
Turk’s lawyer Zeynep Ceren Boztoprak today said her client would be released if the Forensic Medicine Institute issued a report saying he couldn’t remain in prison.
