International media, press organisations demand Turkey releases French photographer

Award winning photographer Mathias Depardon has been under detention in southeastern Turkey since Tuesday 9 May.

A joint statement issued by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), two press freedom organisations and 19 media outlets called on Turkish authorities to release French photographer Mathias Depardon, who has been detained since 9 May.

Amongst the 22 international organisations that signed the letter to Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu were Liberation, Humanité, Le Figaro, Express, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, National Geographic and The Sunday Times Magazine.

RSF demanded the immediate release of Depardon, accused of making “propaganda for a terrorist organisation” after he published pictures of Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) fighters as an assignment for Elle magazine.

Although Turkish authorities issued a verdict for the deportation of Depardon on 11 May, he is still being detained. RSF called his detention “incomprehensible and unacceptable.”
