Islamic world congratulates Turkey – from Hamas to Ahrar al-Sham

Turkey's President Recep Erdogan making the four-fingered "Rabia" hand gesture attributed to the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the organisations that congratulated Turkey for the referendum outcome.

While the US and European countries are waiting for the report by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on Turkey’s referendum before making any statements, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did receive congratulations from the Islamic world.

“Certainly, this referendum will mark the beginning of a new stage in the history of your brotherly country and reinforce the international role and standing of a stable and powerful Turkey,” Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev said.

Turkish presidential sources said Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also congratulated Erdogan.

Izzet Er-Resa, one of Palestinian Hamas’ leaders, used Twitter to send his congratulations to the President and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Islamic fundamentalist group Ahrar al-Sham also used Twitter to congratulate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his victory. The Salafist group, backed by Turkey in the Syrian war, wished success to those working for “the rise of the brothers of Turkey and the Islamic world”.

Talaat Fahmi, spokesman of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency that Turkey gave a lesson in democracy to the world.

Others that reportedly congratulated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Vice President of Iraq, Osama al-Nujaifi, Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, and Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
