The president of PEN International Jennifer Clement has announced that Kurdish writer Burhan Sonmez has joined the PEN International Board.

In an announcement on 13 January, in which she criticised the Turkish government for its silencing of writers and journalists, Clement also announced that Sonmez, the author of three novels, had joined the organisation’s board.

“I am delighted to announce that the wonderful prize-winning novelist, publisher and lawyer Burhan Sonmez has joined the PEN International board,” Clement’s announcement read.

Sonmez, who returned to Turkey after spending 10 years in exile in the UK for political reasons, is the author of three novels: North, Sins and Innocents, and Istanbul Istanbul, which have been translated into more than 20 languages.
