[Updated] Opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Istanbul MP Huda Kaya was detained by police in the western Turkish city of Afyon last night. Kaya was taken to the Diyarbakir Public Prosecution Office hours after being held at Izmir International Airport.
HDP Spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen posted a tweet about the detention and said she was detained within the scope of an investigation launched by the Diyarbakir Public Prosecutor.
Another HDP deputy, Meral Danis Bestas was also detained yesterday and released in the early hours of the morning following questioning.
Four deputies of the left-wing party were also detained and released on Thursday. In a statement following his release, Urfa MP Osman Baydemir said the government was trying to block their campaign against the upcoming constitutional referendum.
11 other HDP deputies deputies, including co-leaders Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag, have been behind bars since November, their cases pending trial. The government has been criticised for suppressing the political activities of the opposition.
