SDF commander Nasir Haj Mansour has told Sputnik that the US will send Apache attack helicopters to support the offensive against the Islamic State (IS) stronghold of Raqqa in northern Syria.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (including the Kurdish YPG) is currently surrounding Raqqa from the north, east and west and is expected to enter the IS stronghold within the next month.
“The US is supporting us with arms and ammunition. We are constantly receiving arms for the Raqqa operation. We have received artillery and armoured vehicles. The US is continuing its preparation for the operation. We wanted Apache helicopters to arrive too. Soon they will be here, Apache helicopters will be used in the Raqqa operation,” the commander claimed.
The US had previously announced that it was sending extra troops to support the operation to liberate Raqqa and is already providing air support for the assault despite objection from the Turkish state which sees the YPG as a terrorist organisation and extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
