Riyad Haddad, the Syrian Ambassador to Russia said that the government of Syria has the right to protect its territory by all means including military if Turkey does not stop its actions in northern Syria.
Speaking to Russian news agency Sputnik, Haddad said, “Syria has the right to respond to any aggression against it. But our government believes the first step should be to inform the international community, international organisations, including the United Nations, and our allies, first of all Russia, in order to find a solution to the issue. But if we cannot find a solution, then certainly the Syrian government will defend its land by all means.”
The Ambassador said that Syria had been fighting against terrorism for the past six years and that his country was committed to seeing out the fight, adding that Turkey was one of the countries which supported the terrorists.
“Turkey is sending in advanced equipment into Idlib and forming training camps for the terrorists there. These activities breach Syria’s territorial sovereignty and violate UN Security Council decisions.
Haddad also said that Turkey’s Euphrates Shield operation into northern Syria, which it announced it had terminated last week, was still ongoing. “in practice, Turkey has not pulled back its soldiers from the north of al-Bab, and they are now building a city there with their allied terrorist organisations.”
