According to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, congratulated Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and all the people of Syria in their victorious fight against the terrorists backed by enemy states. “Syria’s victory against the terrorists came about as a result of the Syrian people standing by their leader and fighting honourably by the side of their army,” Maduro was quoted as saying.

Maduro underlined Venezuela’s principled and consistent support for Syria and said, “I hope Syria will return to security and prosperity as soon as possible,” the news agency reported.

In the phone call, Assad thanked the Venezuelan president and the people of Venezuela for their support. Assad indicated that the attacks against both countries by external forces were aimed at weakening the countries. According to the Syrian President, “both countries are being targeted due to their insistence on being independent and sovereign. Certain states want Syria and Venezuela to make concessions on their independence and sovereignty.”
