Termination of ‘illegitimate’ Euphrates Shield operation a good thing: Russian politician

Konstantin Kosachev

The chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (upper house) of the Russian State Duma has expressed content with Turkey’s decision to end its cross-border Euphrates Shield operation into northern Syria adding that the operation had always been illegitimate.

“We at no point collaborated with Turkey’s operation as it was never conducted in coordination with the Syrian government and for this reason was wholly illegitimate. Due to it being an illegitimate operation, it’s good that it has been ended,” Kosachev said.

“Our collaboration with Turkey is within the parameters of the Astana format, coordinated with the Syrian government,” the Russian politician said adding that this collaboration will continue within the same framework until “the terrorists have been completely eradicated.”
