Torture leaves Iranian journalist blind: claim

Iranian journalist Tahereh Riahi

IranWire has reported that jailed journalist Tahereh Riahi suffered serious damage to her left eye while in Evin Prison, and that she may be in danger of losing sight in the eye completely. It has been reported that another prisoner in Evin overheard Riahi accusing one of her interrogators of damaging her eye.

Riahi was arrested on 27 December 2016 and is imprisoned in Ward 209, reserved mainly for political prisoners.

Tahereh Riahi is the social affairs editor of Borna News Agency. After her arrest, Riahi was charged with “propaganda against the regime,” “spreading lies” and “connections with the enemy media”, although no specifics about the charges against her have been formally released or published.

Claims of torture against journalists is rife in Iran. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the Association of Iranian Journalists, recently called for the retraction of a court ruling ordering the flogging of two other Iranian journalists.

The IranWire is a joint venture by a group of Iranian journalists in the diaspora and seeks to empower citizen journalism.
