Turkey arrests Syrian pilot for violating border security, espionage

The Syrian pilot who crashed on Turkish soil last month has been arrested for violating border security and espionage.

Mehmet Sufhan, the 56-year old colonel, ejected himself from the crashing MIG 21 war plane after it was shot down on its way to strike a target near Idlib in northwestern Syria, held by rebel groups.

He was being treated in a hospital since 4 March when the incident occurred.

Sufhan was arrested several hours after US missile strikes hit a Syrian airbase.
